Do I Need a High-Powered Blender for Smoothies?

It’s hard to make a smoothie without a high-powered blender. Sure, you can make baby food in a food processor, but when making smoothies, they are more complicated than just mashing up some ingredients. A smoothie has to have a smooth, velvety consistency with a punchy fruity flavor.

That said, this doesn’t mean that you need to spend almost $1,000 on a Vitamix, either. Sure, Vitamix blenders are the gold standard when it comes to blending, but they are rarely affordable. Instead, find a mid-range brand that is made for smoothies and when the time comes, order a new blade to keep the machine working well.

Ingredients in Blueberry Oat Muffin Smoothies

  • 2 pints fresh blueberries
  • ½ cup gluten-free rolled oats
  • 2 tablespoons flaxseeds
  • 4 scoops vanilla protein powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1½ cups fresh spinach
  • 4 bananas, sliced then frozen
  • Drizzle of maple syrup (optional)

How to Make Blueberry Oat Muffin Smoothies

Begin by readying your blender. The night before, be sure to slice and freeze your bananas for the next morning.

Add blueberries, oats, flaxseeds, vanilla, spinach, and frozen banana slices to the blender. Be sure to place them in this order to cut down on stopping the blender to scrape down the sides.

Add the optional drizzle of syrup for a little extra sweetness.

Blend on high or on your smoothie setting until the mixture is very thick, creamy, and totally without lumps.

Pour into a chilled glass and serve with a straw. Consume immediately, do not make it ahead of time otherwise the smoothie will melt and discolor.
