What Is Puff Pastry?

Puff pastry is a labor-intensive dough that layers dough and butter over and over. The result is a crisp, layered dough that melts in your mouth from all that butter. You can use it for sweet or savory dishes. While you can make your own, it takes a long time and a lot of effort, so frozen puff pastry comes in handy.

Use puff pastry from homemade danish, savory pesto bites, apple tarts, or anything else! It is so versatile and saves you a lot of time and effort. Plus, the end result is always delicious. Buy gluten-free puff pastry from frozen, keep it in the fridge, and you will always have options for quick desserts, appetizers, and snacks!

Ingredients in Easy 6-Ingredient Cheese Danish

  • 8 oz. softened cream cheese
  • 1 tsp lemon zest
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 egg + 1 yolk
  • 1 box gluten-free puff pastry, such as Schar, thawed and brought to room temperature

How to Make Easy 6-Ingredient Cheese Danish

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

In a bowl, mix the cream cheese, lemon zest, vanilla extract, sugar, and egg yolk only. Mix well.

Add the other egg to a separate bowl and mix with a small splash of water. This will be your egg wash.

Lay out your puff pastry sheets. Slice into 6 equal-sized squares on each sheet, 12 in total.

Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Lay each pastry square onto the lined sheet. Dollop some of the cream cheese filling in the center of each pastry.

Fold each edge into the middle until it is just touching the filling.

Use your egg wash and a pastry brush to brush a thin layer of egg wash on top of the pastry.

Bake for 15-17 minutes or until the pastry is browned and puffed all over. Allow to cool before serving.
